Audiobooks for Leisure / Popular Listening
While the Libraries have an extensive collection of electronic books, only a small portion of these are enabled for streaming audio. In addition, most books we purchase are academic in nature to support degree programs and research and not popular fiction and nonfiction. If you are looking for downloadable audiobooks of popular titles, we suggest you obtain a Fayetteville Public Library card (free to residents of Washington County or those who attend school in Fayetteville) and use their extensive collection of audiobook titles. More information at the link below.
The Libraries are testing a small collection of downloadable audiobooks on the platform OverDrive which uses the Libby reader app. Connect to OverDrive at the link below and filter for audiobooks to see available titles. If you enjoy this pilot service please do let us know!
Enabling Audio for Accessibility
If you are interested in having our ebooks read aloud to you, that functionality is built into some ebook platforms, but not all.
EBSCO and ProQuest Ebooks
- Download a chapter or portion as PDF files. You can then use the Adobe Reader Read Out Loud function to hear the book.
- Alternately, download or "check out" the ebook for a short period of time and use the Adobe Digital Editions software to have the book read aloud.
Other Ebook Platforms
- Download PDF files. You can then use the Adobe Reader Read Out Loud function to hear the book.
- For HTML versions of ebooks, your browser may have built in text-to-speech functionality.
